Advice for new PAs and ADs!

human7:

Most people start working with us as a PA, or Production Assistant. The Production Assistant job is for someone who is either new, looking to have fun and not necessarily work hard, or both.

Basically, a Production Assistant is an all-around hand with whatever needs helping with. This can mean gathering gear, fetching an obscure prop or tech item, helping build something or decorate something, or most often, just getting someone’s attention or conveying a message. Generally one does a few shoots as a Production Assistant and we see how smoothly you work with everybody, whether you end up being a help or an asset, and then give you a bigger job. Most often Design PA or Grip, but sometimes AD! At first as a PA, you might be talking with the director only a little bit, and mostly be working with the ADs, and then later, the DP or Production Designer

The AD, or Assistant Director, has a more trusted role in helping out the director. This can have many forms, here are the main ones I use on a Warren Lynch production, and we have between 1 and 4 at a time:

-Enforcer AD: You are good at getting groups of people to line up and move to different places, and also good at motivating and reminding individual people to do their job on time, correctly, and happily.  Somebody who’s ready to be the bad guy in a gentle way. This often involves being some of all three of the other kinds of AD at the same time. Stee and Scott have been great at this, and Parama and Noelle are quite good. Sometimes this person can double as a producer, or becomes one.

-Organizational AD aka Production Manager: You are good at handling the massive paperwork, charts, forms and schedules. A very good organizational AD would be able to keep the director themselves on schedule, but having almost as clear an idea as the director as to what’s going on and how it’s happening, and being able to answer people’s pressing questions when the director has 5 people lined up to ask them questions, is pretty clutch in itself. Stee, Tamarleigh and Carlo have been great at this job! This person usually goes on to direct their own stuff.

-Morale AD aka “Happiness Officer”: You are a good listener and good at cheering people up. Filmmaking can cause inhuman levels of stress, and just being able to understand people, help them get their needs met and cheer them up, and spreading a naturally cheery vibe, is a very valuable skill. Tom, Parama, Chris, Noelle and Liz have been great at this! This person may move on to a whole host of different film jobs, but always ends up very popular and well-liked anywhere they go 🙂

-Creative AD aka “Faerie Officer”: You understand Warren aesthetically enough to get what the heck he is trying to say artistically when no one else does. This mostly either involves knowing Warren really well or just having super the same views about the individual project. When crewmembers or press or even actors ask what the movie is about, you will be able to happily, excitedly explain. This may or may not be limited to being Stee, Carolyn, Tay, Damien, Garabed or Amy. Who knows.

The DP, or Director of Photography, is higher up than all the ADs and PAs, and is the only person whom you will regularly see contradicting the director. The Director of Photography is in charge of the technical, scientific execution of getting all the director’s ideas into the camera and making it look a certain way using science. They are in charge of the camera people, the lighting people, the grips and the sound people. The DP’s job is often even harder than the directors’, because their job is the most limited by hard facts. They might often appear to be the “bad guy” or the “wet blanket” or the “nay sayer”, but their well-being is the bellwether of the entire shoot. You must keep them happy above all souls, and when they frown, folks must pay close attention! Not listening to them can cause damage, an accident or lost time and footage! I have had excellent DPs before in Erik Angra, Jeremy Traub and Greyson Welch, but my current rave DP is Stee McMorris and I swear by her.

The Production Designer is also senior staff. They run the departments of costumes, props, hair, makeup, sets and special effects.  As a Design PA you will end up working with them! Usually between shoots but also on shoots. Juliet Schneider and Sandri Valente, Desiree Rodriguez and Garabed Setrakian have done this job most excellently! Some shoots have a production designer, some simpler ones do without, it depends!

Listen to these 2-6 people (especially the DP Stee), and we’ll have a fun and harmonious shoot, and you’ll move on to bigger things! Thanks for joining on!

The spirit of New England resilience is demonstrated in its homespun cinema; consequently, our industrious filmmakers offer a diverse array of work in the horror genre. Homegrown Horror spotlights their voices by sharing a sample of the unique and sinister stories lurking beneath the surface of this seemingly idyllic place.
A psychopath in Raynham, Massachusetts is frustrated by modern communication (The Horrors of Auto-Correct); in Portland, Maine, an urban legend hungers for a vulnerable part of a child’s body (Tickle). These are just small glimpses of the ghastly horrors that permeate picturesque New England. Once again, BUFF is thrilled to present a medley of terror served up with genuine love for all that is creepy, gruesome, and disturbing!

I haz a new Patreon video. Click on the picture of my wounded jaw and it will play. I’ve just picked up The Art Of Asking and I am still learning its secrets. But facebook message me if you want to be in it and more loudly shout the good news upon the rooftops!

November Scene Spy!

(Steven Lawlor-Jones on set of “The Thing With No Face”, photo by Stee McMorris)

October was a month of Parties, November is a month of Projects. This November, I worked too hard on the Projects and didn’t tell you all about the Parties. Sorry! But here are some parties and events and happenings and things going on, and you’ll love the projects we are doing…

NEWZ

-our new website!

The Witchworks Films website has had a lovely (partial, tiny, in progress) facelift by Garabed Setrakian of Setravision! Now when you’re checking the Scene Spy, you can also check out our videos page, our current projects page with news on what we are up to, our future wishes page with ways to get involved in the Witchworks dream, and our About Us page with all kinds of buttons to social media so you can contact, send fan letters to or hire anybody on the Witchworks team!

-politics!

Get the money out of the politics. We have crowdsourcing now. We can do anything! Get the signatures!

Check out www.PassMassAmendment.org they are totally making this possible. They didn’t get enough signatures this year, but watch out, weirdly human corporations!

Pass Mass Amendment – About the Ballot Initiative

www.passmassamendment.org

-this list!

In October there was a free Scene Spy every Thursday, and I figured a lot of people would sign up to be $1 Patreon supporters and I would just move the Spy over to Patreon, and keep doing weekly Spies but charge a dollar. Well, I didn’t find any new supporters (click here to be my $1 supporter!) but I did get asked to do about a million video projects. So I’m going to keep doing the Spy because I want to help the community and I like the good karma, but I’m NOT going to charge for it and it’s NOT going to be every week. For now. Basically I’ll put out a spy whenever I’m excited about What’s Going On, around one a month, and if I get enough Dreamers on board sending me a dollar, or other people showing interest in the Spy, it will go back to a more frequent thing.

But it’s still free! Free free free!

-videos by us!

Stee did a short documentary about women’s metal bands, “Sirens of Doomsday”. Check it out!

Stee did a performance video for Tom Tipton, where he strangely turned into Andy Warhol. It’s all a single shot, very 1960s documentary, and Tom brought back the 60s for a little minute, check it out.

We shot another gear test video/Thing With No Face video with Jaime Devine, Steven Lawlor-Jones and Farasha. It’s insane. I’m still editing it. There will be mind-bending CGI. You shall cower before the thing with no face! I’m editing the video as we speak, but when it’s done it’ll be up here.

Stee wrote a short sci-fi thing called “Strange Harvest”! It’s scary as fuck! She is scouting locations and designing props and raising money already, and will be casting before you know it, so WATCH OUT! Put your entire life on hold so Stee can make you a superstar, at some unspecified time SOON. But she will only be casting ONE woman and ONE man. And it’s going to be deeply, dreadfully horrifying.

-recent videos by our friends!

Our own Alex Stinson worked on this, which recently got on SyFy: Dark Haul

Brian Viglione’s “Feelin’ Bad For Dracula”

Tom tipton unboxes things: thing 1 thing 2 thing 3

Mike and Sophia made this a million ago but it’s good: Aquaman’s lament

Ugly boy. We do not know the members of Die Antwoord personally, but we are huge fans of them. Don’t give in and become a sewer clown just because you are ugly. Plenty of women love ugly men. Yo-landi from Die Antwoord prefers them exclusively!

-other name-dropping!

The Emperor of Humanity has a facebook presence now!

You missed our superstar Katie Coriander at her shows on November 15th and November 21st at Out of the Blue Too and Cuisine En Locale, because I didn’t do any Scene Spies this month until just now. This is the fault of sapient dinosaurs. Go back in time and see her shows. Or just see her upcoming shows December 1st (Zuzu) and 10th (Midway Café) and January 8th (TT’s)

The art of asking. Omg if you’re an artist anywhere ever, you’ve asked yourself at least once: How can I have success and fame fall (relatively) easily into my lap while having a wonderful, fulfilling, joyous time of it all and being true to myself, just like Amanda Palmer? Of course the first answer is it helps to have an upper middle class education, manners, attitude, contacts and privileges. Obviously. But already assuming we already do or don’t have those things, how can we leverage what we’ve got and launch ourselves into a bliss-world of ultimate satisfaction? By asking, aka busking! Entertain people really well, and THEN say “yes please may I have a dollar?” in just the right way. It’s not just the entertaining, it’s also the asking. Which can be completely utopian in itself and create bliss worlds of fans with couch forts. Yes yes, I must get this book. I think it is good even though I haven’t read it, because Amanda is so good at “spiritual busking” that it MUST be good! Please beam this book into my brain immediately.

2015 vampire calendar by Rob Fitz! It’s out! Our own Jaime Devine is in it! Get one for Xistmas!

-fan support!

We’ve also got a feature and a TV show we could do, but we need more encouragement! Watch our existing videos and comment on them! Tell us what you like! Subscribe to our Witchworks channel! Leave comments! Tell your friends about this list, and go to the events on it and have fun! Tell media outlets about us! Get interviewed for my Patreon video! Thu 27th

National Day of Mourning. Yes it is Thanksgiving. As we celebrate family and togetherness, many Native American allies pause to consider the injustices of our past in the founding of this nation. “For what does settler imply, if not a willingness to settle for a meal of human flesh?”

Since 1970, Native Americans have gathered at noon on Cole’s Hill in Plymouth to commemorate a National Day of Mourning on the US thanksgiving holiday. Many Native Americans do not celebrate the arrival of the Pilgrims and other Europeean settlers. Thanksgiving day is a reminder of the genocide of millions of Native people, the theft of Native lands, and the relentless assault on Native culture. Participants in National Day of Mourning honor Native ancestors and the struggles of Native peoples to survive today. It is a day of remembrance and spiritual connection as well as a protest of the racism and oppression that Native Americans continue to experience.
Join us as we dedicate the 45th National Day of Mourning to our brother, Native political prisoner Leonard Peltier. Add your voice to the millions world-wide who demand his freedom. Help us in our struggle to create a true awaren of Native peoples and demonstrate the unity of Indigenous peoples internationally. Help shatter the untrue glass image of the Pilgrims and the unjust system based on racism, sexism, homophobia and war.

8pm “David Boobie” This is what you wish American Horror Story really was like.

Black Friday is approaching once again, which means it’s time for the glorious return to Cambridge of Bowie-flavored striptease. “Niki Stardust and the Total Blam Blams” (aka Niki Luparelli and The Gold Diggers) bring back to OBERON their lascivious tribute to David Bowie and the female form.
There will be from twenty-two to twenty-five songs performed live over the course of the night, from ballads like “Life on Mars” to rockers like “Modern Love.” The band, “Niki Stardust and the Total Blam Blams,” comprises Brooks “Shields” Milgate on keyboard, Olga Supernova on violin, Gin Murphy on tenor sax, Johnny English on alto sax, Miss Christine on bass, Fanny Fandango on backup vocals, and of course Niki “Stardust” Luparelli on lead vocals, sass, and boobs. The dancers—representing both traditional burlesque and the edgier, campier neo-burlesque style—are all wham bam thank you ma’am.

****DAVID BOWIE COSTUME CONTEST! $100 Prize!*****
So, on Black Friday, rather than pushing through the market square, driving like a demon from station to station, and running wild through a million dead-end streets in search of Christmas bargains, you should instead spit in the eyes of fools, put on your red shoes, and run to the centre of things—Club Oberon, that is—where each table offers a seat with the clearest view, and femme fatales emerge from shadows, disrobing to the best of Bowie, all night long.

Saturday November 29th

7pm BACKWATER at Somerville theatre

I have a scary feeling we’re going to have to widen the seats a little bit as all of us recover from our post-Thanksgiving gluttony turkey fest, but dammit, there’s movies to be screened!
We’ve got a fantastic feature for your viewing pleasure this November. Chris Schrack’s BACK WATER is a terrific example of what you can do with a smart idea and limited means.
Cass and Mark (Liana Werner-Gray and Justin Tully respectively) are out to enjoy a weekend at the secluded lakeside Cass used to enjoy as a little girl. Their idyllic time away is shattered when they hear a cry for help in the wilderness. Torn over whether to seek them out or leave well enough alone, Mark’s good samaritan side kicks in while Cass gives up the ghost early. Separately they encounter a lone fisherman with a suspicious lack of equipment and the town’s sheriff that seems to have questionable motives for patrolling the woods. It comes as no surprise then that later in the night Mark and Cass find themselves attacked by and on the run from an unseen assailant. With their car disabled and their supplies strewn about the campsite, the duo are forced to hideout in order to survive the night.
Sounds like something you’ve seen a thousand times before, right? Wrong. Back Water takes some wild turns from the midpoint on, and Scrack does a terrific job between ramping up your adrenaline and keeping you on the edge of your seat with moments of nailbiting tension.
As always, we’ll have a presentation of short films before the feature, including Stephen Martin’s DEAD HEARTS, which isa fantastic and whimsical little horror comedy that plays out EXACTLY what you believe a Wes Anderson horror movie would.
The night starts at 7Pm in the Somerville Theater Microcinema, next to the Museum of Bad Art.

9pm Old School Game Show at Somerville Theatre

Are you ready to melt some faces like a Gremlin in a microwave oven?!?… Then throw on your favorite Iron Maiden T shirt, grab that Flying V and head on over to… Old School Game Show’s “Headbanger’s Balls To The Wall Free-For-All” That’s right, It’s the acid washed Heavy Metal themed edition of everyone’s favorite interactive Alt Trivia Variety Program.
Featuring the Eddie Van Halen approved finger tapping virtuosity of The Swinging OSGS Band!! And a brand new Dance Number ( of the Beast) from the Cubic Zirconia Dancers!!! ( Eat your heart out Tawny Kitaen ) Plus fabulous individual round Prizes from Great Local Sponsors and the $100 cash prize for the night’s true OSGS champion!!
OSGS is a live interactive theatre experience done with all the pageantry and analog style of a 1970’s television game show. The show combines elements of pub trivia, variety specials, and comedy sketches to produce a completely unique trivia experience that tests players pop culture acumen. With influences as vast as vaudeville, Pee Wee’s Playhouse, Andy Kaufman, and Battle of the Network Stars how could you go wrong? The entire show is backed by an amazing live band playing original OSGS music. It’s all the fun of an afternoon spent rolling around in the rumpus room without the rug burn.
When you arrive at the show the lovely usher who takes your ticket will ask you if you are interested in playing the game (you also have the option of just watching the show, you kinky bastard). If you would like to play you will receive a name tag and your name will be placed in our official OSGS fishbowl. At the beginning of the show 8 contestants will be called up to the stage (Price is Right Style) and divided into two teams to compete in the first round. The winning team of each round will win fun, fabulous prizes and the losing team will be replaced with new contestants. This continues over several rounds (each one a completely new original category) until the night’s greatest contestants square off against one another, Highlander style, until there is one final Old School Game Show Champion!

Saturday December 13th

7pm Somerville Theatre: Etheria Film Night

For the third consecutive year, All Things Horror is proud to be the North East screening partner of the Etheria Film Night. Founded by Heidi Honeycutt as an offshoot of the Viscera Film Festival, Etheria was created as a short film showcase for the talented women working in the science fiction and fantasy genres. This year the festival folds horror back into the mix as the fest embraces a multitude of subgenres while staying true to its mission of promoting women working in the film industry.
This year the festival packs a doozie of a lineup, including the New England premiere of Axelle Carolyn’s gothic, supernatural romance SOULMATE. Ms. Carolyn’s next project is the recently announced Tales Of Halloween anthology, coproduced by Darren Bousman (Saw III – V, The Devil’s Carnival”) and Neil Marshall (Dog Soldiers, The Descent) so I would expect to hear massive things from her in the comings months.
Etheria whittled down hundreds of submissions in order to present the absolute best and most entertaining lineup for the short film program. This year’s touring lineup includes the following:
JELLY WRESTLER
HIDE & SEEK
DAWN
YOU, ME & HER
SERPENT’S LULABYE
113 DEGREES
LITTLE LAMB
The Etheria Film Night runs on Saturday December 13th beginning at 7pm with a special encore presentation on Sunday the 14th at 2pm.
